Bunk beds are generally found in two sizes, twin and full size. These bed sizes can be paired together or mixed to create a bunk design to suit the needs of the buyer. You will find bunk beds that have two twins, bunks with two full beds, or bunk beds with a twin on top and a full at the bottom.

Twin size beds are most common and there are still many people who are not even aware that they can acquire a full size in bunk bed form. The standard design for twin beds is usually the classic one twin over another, but there are actually different ways that the two twins can be adjoined. If you are a woodworking enthusiast you may have at one time thought about building a bed. There is no easier bed to start with than a simple twin bed. Luckily there are plenty of quality twin bed plans on the marketplace that will provide instructions, material list, diagrams and photos to help guide you along the way.

Dorm Sheets - Will Regular Twin Size Sheets Work on My Dorm Bed?

A typical dorm room mattress is considered an "extra long twin." This size has become the standard in dorm rooms for the comfort of the taller students. Full size and larger beds are not practical in a dorm's limited space; but an extra-long twin gives you extra length while preserving value floor space.

Your standard length twin sheet simply will not work on your dorm bed; an extra long sheet is five full inches longer than a regular twin. A regular twin is 75" long and an extra long twin is 80" long. You won't find any sheet fabric that will stretch that much.

Can I use Queen Size or Full Size Sheets?

Instead of searching for extra long twin sheets, you may be inclined to pack your full (a.k.a double) or queen size sheets. Good try; but this isn't a great idea. You will run into the same problem with your full size sheets that you did with your regular twin length; they won't fit. A full size bed is the same length as a regular twin. While a queen size will indeed fit length-wise on your dorm bed (both are 80"), you will find that the extra 21 inches in width will become a hassle in no time.

Many stores now carry extra long twin sizes sheets in a variety of colors; but the selection is still not as great as it is with regular size sheets. If you cannot find the perfect color to match your other bedding or room decor, only purchase the fitted sheet in the extra long size. Buy one in a neutral, solid color and pair it with a regular-size top sheet in your desired color or print.

Do Other Bedding Pieces Need to be Extra Long?

The one other item for you bed that must be in the extra long size is the mattress pad. Like the fitted sheet, it must be long enough to stretch around the mattress. Like we talked about with the sheets, a queen size mattress pad will certainly fit but with the bulk of the extra material your bed will always be a mess.

Whether you purchase extra long blankets and comforters for your bed, is mostly dependent on how tall you are. These are not fitted to the mattress, so regular length will technically work just fine. If you are on the tall side and don't enjoy your feet hanging out, you may want to consider an extra long length.

With the growing number of pillow-top style mattress being sold lately, you'll see a lot of fitted sheets and mattress pads labeled with something like "fits deep mattresses." These will work on your bed. You won't find the excess fabric to be too much of a nuisance; but they certainly aren't necessary. You may even be able to save some money on the regular depth sizes.

Mattress Size Details:

Twin Size (also known as a Single): Twin size is large enough for one child or one small adult. It's also often ordered for a bunk bed, daybed, hi-riser, or as a mattress and a boxspring set for a small guest room. Twin size is good for a child, but keep in mind when they get older they may grow out of it.

Twin XL: Twin XL is used for dorm room mattresses as it gives the extra length for students who are tall. When you push two Twin XL mattresses together it forms a king size. Twin XL is also ordered for beds with electric adjustable bases as it prevents your feet from hanging off the edge of the mattress when the base reclines.

Full Size: (also known as a Double): Full size gives more comfort for one person as it has 15 more inches in width than a twin size. It is possible to fit two people into a full size mattress but it only gives each person 27" of width (which is the same width as a crib mattress).

Full Long (Full XL): The same width as a full but 80" long. Good if your tall but don't have the space for a queen. Note: Full long is usually the same price as a queen with most retailers as the wholesale price is often the same.

Three Quarter Size: This size is usually for an antique bed. Antique beds can usually be found at auctions. Most of the major manufacturers do not make this size.

Queen Size: This is the most common size mattress ordered for two adults. It gives six more inches of width for the sleeping area than a full size mattress and five inches more length.

King Size: This is the ideal size for two adults if you have the space in your bedroom.

It gives plenty of space between you and your sleeping partner. Because you are not as close to your partner, you also get a reduction in the transfer of motion making it less likely for your partner to wake you up.

California King: This is the ideal size for those really tall people. It gives you 4 inches less width than a King Size, but four inches more in the length. We have NBA players order this size.

Twin, Full Size, and Queen Futon Mattress Selections

The size of the futon mattress is determined by the person that will be using it. There are different sizes to choose from, depending on the area, width and height of each. Some of the same sizes even have different thicknesses depending on whether they are to be used as bed or couches. Futons used as beds will have to accommodate the entire frame of the person that will sleep on it, plus allowances for movements done while sleeping. However, if the mattress is to be used as couches, it can be a little narrower to allow for people to sit on it and to avoid taking too much room.

Twin Sized Mattress

The twin futon mattress is suitable for a single person that is sleeping alone. Its specifications include a wideness of 39 inches and length of 75 inches, enough for a person with a height of less than 5'5" to sleep comfortably. This kind of mattress is also called a single bed and is mostly chosen for teenagers and kids that are not tall enough to require a bigger space. It is able to fit in a small room as a bed or can also be folded to double up as a couch.

Twin Sized Mattress

The full size futon mattress is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. It is commonly known as double beds, for they can accommodate two small people that require a small space. The length of the double bed is similar to that of a twin bed but wider to given extra space. This is the typical spare bed added in guest quarters to estimate the needs of the guest. Instead of buying too small or too large mattresses for extra beddings, the average can be substituted. Those who cannot afford buying a queen futon mattress sometimes go for the double bed instead. If the couple is not too mobile when they sleep, then the double bed can be able to serve their sleeping needs.

The queen futon mattress is about 60 inches in width and 80 inches in length. This is the usual choice of couples when the size of the bed is concerned. A medium built couple can fit in comfortably in the space provided. However, this bed is not exclusive for couples only. There are people who like to spread out when they sleep, and their sprawling their limbs would have to require for more space. The extra space that queen beds offer makes for a more comfortable sleep. The only catch is that queen beds are naturally more expensive when compared with twin and double beds.
